Abstract: The public sphere from its origin was and will continue to be a contested area where various subjects are debated. The subject of criminal punishment happens to be one of these contested elements. Thus, the idea of criminal punishment in the public sphere depends on the different meanings the various actors attach to it. The dissertation aims to research how and why different respondents in the Maltese public sphere perceive criminal punishment from different perspectives. Moreover, it aims to find those factors which seem to influence the way respondents view this particular subject.
