Female addiction : a social work perspective

Abstract

The present study focuses on the various issues related to female addiction. By means of in-depth interviews with twelve female drug users and consultation of literature by other writers on the subject, the research succeeds in introducing new insights and alternative understandings in this area Accounts of the women convey how gender affects drug consumption patterns, the difficulties found in caring for their children, the effects of power relations, the harsh reality of stigma and the high risk of getting into prostitution. The study investigates criminal proceedings against these women and hints at defects in the system. It also explores perceptions of treatment options which recognise gender blind services and unfamiliarity with the women's specific needs and issues. Substantial amount of text allows the women to speak for themselves, to describe from their point of view the lifestyles which have evolved around their use of illicit drugs. This enables the study to explore distinct experiences in females' drug career, to identify gender differences in addiction and to recognise the women's needs. Such thorough understanding of the women's world brings to light new aspects of drug policies, treatment services and social work provision. In essence, the study promotes awareness of the reality of female addiction in our society, it highlights inadequacies that directly or indirectly enforce their habit and introduces perspectives and methods of intervention that enable their rehabilitation.
