Abstract: Women diagnosed with breast cancer are affected in various aspects of their life. Women are affected physically due to the treatment taken especially when they have undergone mastectomy. Moreover, they are affected psychologically due to the sometimes devastating effects that treatment leaves upon the women. However, in such circumstances, it is not only the woman who is affected. The impact that a diagnosis of breast cancer upon married women is also felt by her spouse. The relationship is altered and the couples need to find new ways of coping. Furthermore, intimate relationships are affected since treatment impinges upon sexuality and the way that the partner sees them with their altered body. The aim of the dissertation is to look at the effects that breast cancer has on the women. Moreover, this research also looks at the effects that it has in particular with respect to intimate relationships. Through the experience of three couples who participated in the study the researcher will be analyzing the issues and needs that couples have to deal with and thus suggest various services that would be an asset for the couple undergoing the turmoil of breast cancer.
