Reconciliation : personal and ecclesial Augustine of Hippo's model

Abstract

Ignoring God is the main consequence for the loss of direction that marks contemporary society, resulting in loneliness, violence, discontent and loss of confidence, thus recurring to drugs, alcohol and suicidal attempts. Leaders of the Church find themselves puzzled by this situation. Experience shows that personal qualities and material goods do not guarantee the hope which the human spirit is constantly seeking. The present work will focus on the theme of reconciliation, both personal and ecclesial, taking Augustine of Hippo as a model. None other than Augustine, especially in his 'Confessions,' highlights his personal journey back to God better. As a bishop and Pastor, Augustine's theology and pastoral practice of ecclesial reconciliation can serve as a powerful tool for reinforcing our vision. The Church today would benefit greatly from an authentic Augustinian aggiornamento in the area of ecclesial reconciliation.
