I have been asked the question, 'what does it mean to be a Church?' Often I have heard such statements as, 'the Church is irrelevant and has lost its power'. This dissertation will seek to understand better the empowering role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church both in the Hierarchy and in the Laity. In order to do this I first studied the importance of the Holy Spirit in Luke's Gospel and in Acts. In analyzing Luke's Gospel and Acts I answer the following questions; who is the Holy Spirit? What is the role of the Holy Spirit according to Luke? Why did the Holy Spirit manifest Himself at Pentecost? This study will highlight the fundamental truths as regards the outpouring of the Spirit as the source of life in the Church. Within this dissertation I will be building a bridge from Pentecost at the beginning of the Church to its significance in the life of the Church today. I will be presenting the pneumatology of the Dogmatic Constitution, Lumen Gentium and also I shall be seeking the true pneumatology present within various documents of Vatican II. Tying all this together I shall be linking it to the empowering of Life in the Spirit in the Charismatic Renewal of the Church in Malta.en_GB
