Abstract: | Welcome to the first issue of Nursing in Critical Care for the new year. In our editorial for this issue, we discuss the impact of critical care nursing and outline some of our plans for the journal in the context of the World Health Organisation’s designation of the year 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. The rest of this issue celebrates this designation through a collection of UK and international papers about various aspects of critical care nursing, including pain assessment and management, critical care outreach services, assessment and management of enteral nutrition, patient diaries in paediatric intensive care settings, cardiac telemetry monitoring, critical care competency frameworks and oral care for intubated patients.
