Abstract: This dissertation aims to explore the following research question: Do teachers' perceptions about the profession change over time? It sought to see in what ways do teachers' views, opinions and beliefs change over the years. To do this we explored the expectations of student teachers following the B.Ed (Hons.) programme. The study explored the B.Ed (Hons.) students' motives for entering into the teaching profession especially at a time where there is a greater teacher supply than demand. This was followed with a survey covering teachers who are currently teaching in Maltese primary schools. Our results have concluded that initial beliefs held by teachers regarding their profession do change over time, mainly due to what they experience in the classroom. Furthermore, the study also noted that the teacher education programme does not provide a thorough experience of what it entails being a full time teacher.
