Abstract: | Land use conflict is inevitable due to the characteristics of the Maltese Islands. Certain areas have developed at a faster rate throughout the long history of Malta, while others have retained their rural characteristics. However, the current rate of development of the Islands has made it very difficult to retain urban sprawl out of rural environments. This study aims to investigate the sources of conflict between agricultural activities and educational institutions in L-Imselliet, and provide measures for mitigation. By using a qualitative methodology, the stake holders were able to express their views and justify their arguments. Additionally, field studies were conducted to verify the sources of hardship identified by the stakeholders. The analysis of primary data and secondary data shows that farmers in L-Imselliet are experiencing a degree of hardship due to the educational institutions in the area. Proper management strategies are discussed, promoting agenda 21 as the only sustainable way to a better future for L-Imselliet. |
