Abstract: The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines 'decline' as a 'gradual loss of vigour or excellence, decay, deterioration' . Was this the case during the last decades of the Hospitallers' rule in Malta? The aim of this work is to attempt to identify any aspects that meet these criteria and their relationship with the fall of Malta into the hands of the invading French forces in 1798. For this purpose, this dissertation will analyse Malta during the second half of the eighteenth century through secondary sources. This will be done through an overview of the political, economic, and social context that started to take shape within this small geographical unit and how these elements were related to us by a number of historians. The economic difficulties the Order faced during the mid- and late eighteenth century coupled with the Order's increasing difficulty to find sympathy from the Christian courts of Europe, who were by now severely doubting the relevance of a crusading institution, at a time when the Ottoman Empire was in clear decline, will be given particular importance in this analysis. Besides the troubled political and economic state that the Order was facing, it is also of importance and interest to analyse the relationship between the Knights and the native inhabitants of the Maltese islands as a study of the latter stages of the Enlightenment and the advent of the French Revolution cannot be attempted without an analysis of the different social classes present within this fiefdom due to the impact which this period had on social perspectives and hiearchies.
