Abstract: | Terrorism as an action is as old as humanity itself. As a concept it is only as young as democracy in Europe. The history of terrorism has shaped its modern equivalent and through its observation an understanding of the subject can be made. Through a definition and examination of several case studies we can understand what security measures are required to combat this phenomenon. Europe's experience, both old and new is reflected in all and any measures taken to combat the problem. The culmination of experience and necessity has given birth to a European framework for combating terrorism. This work will reveal the history behind the notion of terrorism and the way in which terrorism has evolved into its modern representation. The work will continue to explain the motivation behind terrorism and present several acts of terrorism that have been carried out against Europe. The security measures taken to combat the problem will then be critically analysed. |
