The Labour Party (PL) won the March 9, 2013 general/national elections by an impressive margin of 35,107 votes and 13 seats in Parliament over the Nationalist Party (PN). This was an extraordinary result in Maltese general elections since independence from Great Britain in 1964. It was a landslide victory for the PL and a massive defeat for the PN as there appeared to have been a veritable sea change in the Maltese electorate. Yet, one may argue that the writing may have been on the wall for several months, if not a number of years, and that the result may or should have not been totally unexpected. In this essay, I will try to explore the reasons for the unparalleled outcome of the 2013 general elections.en_GB
