Abstract: The main objective of this study was to analyse the best way forward as an alternative to EU membership with regards to agriculture. In the light of the findings, there was an attempt to make a number of recommendations aimed to provide a better stimulus to the debate on the implications of Malta's EU membership on the local agricultural sector, in particular the dairy industry. A historical analysis of the CAP was complemented by the experience of the Canary and Aegean Islands' both granted special treatment in order to fulfil the objectives of the CAP-regime, given that such regions suffer from peripherality and insularity. Moreover, the options of EU membership and Free Trade Area were studied, namely by explaining the 'Swiss model' for a free-trade area policy, and by exploring the possible impact or rull membership for the Maltese agricultural sector. A particular reference was given to the dairy industry via a questionnaire that was carried out among these farmers. Finally, a presentation of the results was made. Having such data, it was then possible to review which would be the best policy option for the agricultural sector in Malta given its current state of affair.
