The role of nongovernmental organisations in international relations

Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to try and establish what role nongovernmental organizations play in international relations. I will attempt to answer this question with the use of texts and such other material. Some case studies will also be used to be able to analyse the position of nongovernmental organizations within international relations. This process begins by discussing the rise of non-state players after the end of the Second World War after which a series of changes began to occur in world politics, which led to the demolition of past political barriers. Once the position of these organisations is established it moves on to view the influence they manage to exert, with the help of a number of cases which have occurred, in such areas as international law. To further show their influence the web of relations and the networks established amongst themselves and other bodies, aimed at extending their influence, is discussed. By then one would be able to get a picture of the role nongovernmental organizations play in international relations and will be able to understand further these organizations. Since nongovernmental organizations are international bodies their international influence in relation to Malta will also be discussed, aimed at further clarifying the position nongovernmental organizations hold in international relations.
