Abstract: Malta is a small nation, or micro-state, in the center of the Mediterranean Sea. The country of Malta comprises a chain of fi ve islands; most of the population resides on Malta, the largest of these islands, and some on Gozo, the second largest. Malta is the smallest state in the European Union (EU) with a population of 400,000 and a land area of 316 square kilometers (122 square miles). The economy is based on tourism, as well as fi nancial and information technology services, some manufacturing, and a thriving fi lm industry. Each year, more than a million tourists visit the islands.
