During the twentieth century, Strait Street provided a confluence of unending fun, primarily to foreigners visiting the island. In its heyday, men hovered up and down this narrow public space to fraternise with women, drink, gamble and dance. Barmaids and barmen, prostitutes, transvestites, musicians, singers, cooks and even a tattooist took advantage of the patron's interest in their services. For some, the street provided a means of living, for others, it was an abyss of unorthodox behaviour.en_GB
