Abstract: The thesis at hand sets out to investigate the efficiency differences of State-owned Enterprises in China in relation to their geographical location. State-owned Enterprises have been the basis of a number of studies, yet an assessment of their location and whether this impacts on their efficiency have been largely neglected. The purpose is thus, to examine in how far geography has played and continuous to play a role in the efficiency of SO Es throughout their establishment and reform process. In order to deliver extensive findings, the historical background of SOEs will be introduced, followed by reforms and their encountered problems. The impact of the geographical location on the efficiency difference among SOEs was apparent due to being enshrined in a segregated reform process. In addition, the geographical location is identified as the succumbed facet comprising further aspects impeding the efficiency of SOEs, such as culture and natural conditions. However, other factors such as government interference and corruption further the geographical efficiency differences amongst those enterprises. Countering the downward stream of efficiency is thus a necessity realized even by the governmental body which started to introduce reform policies shaped along the lines. Nevertheless, these policies are complex and are lacking the touch with grassroots principles, hence proposed in this thesis.
