Abstract: The authors of this booklet are qualified teachers both working in the field of disability. Pierre Demanuele is still working as a teacher within the peripatetic team for special schools. He teaches Physical Education. Fred Bezzina is at present the Executive Director of the Kummissjoni Nazzjonali Persuni b'Diżabilita`. Both have a daughter with a disability. Hence when they had to choose a theme for their long assignment for the Diploma in Education, Administration and Management, it was only natural that they opted for a theme within special education. Profs C Farrugia insisted that as far as possible he prefers a "practical" assignment, that is something which can eventually be used in practice. It is our sincere hope that one day this work, if found good enough, and after field tested, will eventually be published. Since this is a "practical" work, we refrained from making the text heavy by inserting quotations or references. Obviously as can be seen from the bibliography the authors consulted a vast number of books. Furthermore, the authors did their best to present this work in an attractive format so that the users, that is regular teachers and school administrators, will find it easier to use. This book includes also a list of useful addresses, a short reading list of useful publications and also a vocabulary list of important words. These words are indicated in the text by being printed underlined. This book contains also pictures of basic signs together with some expressions from the Maltese Sign Language. These pictures are accompanied by a video containing these signs and expressions together with the manual alphabet. This video is included because signs, being visual, are easier to understand and copy using a visual medium. In the book, one can also find an index of all these signs and expressions in alphabetical order. Naturally this is a students’ work and it would be a great pleasure to us should this eventually be published. However more input, which requires more time and financial resources, has to go into it in order to be up to the necessary standards to be published. In fact, we suggest the following measures to be taken prior to publication a) the whole document is field tested with a small number of peripatetic teachers, teachers teaching in regular classes, parents of deaf children and deaf adults. b) the final version of the video of Maltese basic signs is re-done professionally. c) the whole layout of the printed document is re-done following professional advice.
