Abstract: This essay compares the position of the teaching staff, Asst/Heads and Heads of Schools in the Federal Republic of Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg and Malta. A comparative study of this kind is not a conclusive report on the working conditions in the above-mentioned countries. It merely lays the basis for further studies. On the other hand, the education systems of the countries studied are so diverse that it is impossible to describe them fully in the limited length of this assignment. The Federal Republic of Germany and Ireland do not even have a single uniform system of education, with uniform employment conditions for teaching staff. In this case the most important aspects of teachers' employment conditions were taken. There are other elements such as the subject or subjects taught, the geographical location in which the teacher works, special qualifications needed, length of teacher training, duties other than teaching, marital status and family circumstances. No attempt was made to take these into consideration. Consequently, no conclusions were arrived at about which country offers the best conditions of employment. This assignment only tries Lo present in a systematic way the information needed to compare the selected countries' position of teaching posts. Finally, any reference to men should be taken to include women and vice versa.
