Abstract: This chapter presents some of the most salient notions of autonomous language learning. It seeks also to identify the main staging posts in the development of the New Technologies which have led to the growth and spread of the notion of autonomous language learning. Through the presentation of the e-MaltiLingual project, a practical framework for autonomous language learning via the Internet is promoted.
