Abstract: | Malta and Gozo are among the most remote islands in the Mediterranean: they are not directly visible from any mainland (though it is said that, on occasions, the fiery ,summit of Mount Etna can just about be seen on the horizon from Malta) and require a sea voyage of 80 Km to reach them from Sicily. Their small size and relative remoteness give the islands a T/DR ranking of 0.1, one of the lowest rankings of any Mediterranean island. The Maltese Islands have attracted a great deal of attention in the archaeological literature (Zammit 1930; Evans 1959, 1971a) on account of the remarkable stone temples. Following on from Zammit's (1930) early work, Trump (1966) carried out important excavations at the temple site of Skorba. More recently the culture sequence of Maltese prehistory has been revised (Evans 1984) and recent excavations at the Brockdorff Circle (Bonanno et al. 1990). have given rise to new ideas about the social and cultural significance of monumental ritual in the Maltese Neolithic (Stoddart et al. 1993). As a result of this research it is now possible to outline, with some confidence, a detailed chronology of Maltese earlier prehistory The principal features of the culture sequence can be summarised as follows (Stoddart et al. 1993). |
