Abstract: The aim of this project is to design, construct and test a compensator providing smooth control of reactive power which is required by three-phase variable loads. The system powerfactor is measured and compared with a predetermined reference value. The power-factor is adjusted to get the determined value by controlling the firing-angle of a thyristorized static VAr (Volts-Ampere reactive) compensator through microcomputer software. The power-factor correcting scheme must also take care of low order harmonics in order not to distort the supply voltage.
