Abstract: The aim of this assignment is to provide information about Library Facilities in Malta for Persons with Special Needs (disabilities), at various libraries in Malta. It also intends to bring awareness of the needs of these people. which should be catered for. While identifying an area of research as part of my OLIS course. this study grew out of much concern raised during personal experiences while raising a son who suffers from traits of autism. Definitions of disabilities and their practical implications are also given in this assignment. People with disabilities may be disabled from birth, may be a result of disease, accident, trauma and stress in life or old age. Still these people's needs are the same like any other person in society. Persons with special needs are meant mental, physical, emotional. and learning disabilities. These persons still have a need for full development, for education and support, leisure and happiness, and the right for all the access and facilities for their specific needs in public buildings including libraries and information resources. Facilities do not only include the physical structure of the building but also all the facilities of modern technology available to facilitate their communication and accessibility for library use. Services provided by trained library personnel and their attitude towards persons with disabilities are questioned. Library facilities and accessibility have been very much neglected and a change in attitude will have positive influence in motivating. and enhancing the development of the disabled society. As all citizens of a society are generally considered equal in the eyes of the law. sharing the same civic rights and duties. then the whole culture has to change and treat these people as people with disabilities. and full of potential, for the benefit of our society.
