Abstract: It seems that the Phoenicians had their earliest contact with the Maltese islands in the eighth, if not even in the ninth century BC, during their mercantile expeditions in the Western Mediterranean. Thus started the Phoenician-Punic period of the Maltese island which was to last until 218 BC, when they passed into the hands of the Romans during the second Punic war. This long period has yielded an unobtrusive, but very rich archaeological heritage, which includes some above-ground architectural remains, many rock-cut tombs, rings, amulets, inscriptions, pottery, anthropoid sarcophagi, and new important environmental remains from the current excavations at the site of Tas-Silg.
