| Abstract: | The Beatitudes form an essential part of the Gospel tradition; they set the whole tone for the Sermon on the Mount. We shall see what the pagan and Jewish cultures respectively had to say about human happiness. Then we shall compare the text on the Beatitudes in Matthew and Luke. Analysis of each Beatitude follows. A theological synthesis closes our treatment. |
