Abstract: | The aim of this paper is to present a support tool that can be used by authorities when designing and managing roads and enforcing driving behaviour for road safety. A common indicator used to assess road safety levels is the number of road-related deaths relative to the population, hence why Malta is always seen to have a relatively high level of safety on the road. Other indicators however would suggest otherwise. In 2005, Transport Malta (TM) and the Police joined forces to improve the injury accident data collection and a new record sheet was introduced, requiring the Police to provide a much detailed account of the accident. The 2005-6 dataset collated by TM will be used to analyse road injury accidents using Geographic Information Systems. The conclusions will show the importance of good quality data and the applicability of spatial analysis as a tool for the development of accident mitigation measures. |
