Abstract: The development of novel materials through Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) using a number of different approaches such as solidification and environmental control are explored. Novel materials being investigated and increasing in popularity are described such as graded materials and functional materials (e.g., shape memory alloys, magnetic materials, superconductors). Other novel material approaches to laser powder bed fusion of high-performance Ni-based materials, high performance Al-based materials, and high entropy alloys are also discussed.
