Abstract: This dissertation examines the changes in trade policy which Malta would have to adapt in the light of its application to become a full member of European Community. It also discusses the different trade policies Malta has followed and the recent main changes in trade policy. This study also evaluates some of the effects on the local trade sector- and pinpoints the basic differences which exist between the EC's and local trade policies. Although it is probable that the EC would give Malta a transition period during which our policies would be harmonised to the EC rules and regulations, the need for Malta to update its trade legislation and policies is urgently called for. This study is meant to shed insight in those local policies which are fundamentally lacking in terms of EC trade rules and those which are already in line vis-a-vis EC trade policy. An important fact which emerges from this study is that even if Malta's application for EC membership is not accepted certain aspects of Maltese law still need to be amended and new approaches introduced if Malta is to adjust to the competitive environment in today's world.
