In this study I review the contemporary role of Maltese women in the nuclear family as multiple roles have been imposed on women by society. The study is a sociological analysis of the functions of women in the family with respect to the traditional role. From early childhood nurture is given in the family, this moulds behaviour and attitudes, which stem within various social relationships. Traditionally women assume housekeeping responsibilities while men are associated with the financial and administrative tasks. Besides, women contribute to .other activities. Hence they meet difficulties in balancing out the family workload and in pursuing other goals in life. This dissertation involves the collection of in-depth case studies and focuses on detailed information from the interviewees. The qualitative approach was applied in this study to evaluate the existing role of women in the contemporary family. This study is a careful appraisal of the role of women in the family and to find out if partners are participating equally to make the family a place for growth, sharing and understanding.en_GB
