Abstract: An international airport like any other workplace offers various risks and hazards to its employees. These hazards are specific for every organisation which operates inside it, one of these organisations is the Customs Department. The employees who work within this department have to face various hazards on a daily basis which are exclusive to their job and others that are common for every other airport employee. Most of these hazards can be unknown for those who do not have a safety and health culture and for this very reason the author of this dissertation decided to compile a study on this issue by focusing solely on the Customs of Malta personnel stationed at the Malta International Airport (MIA). Hopefully this work will be a guide for all Customs personnel working at an international airport in identifying all the risks and hazards found in this kind of workplace. As part of this study a questionnaire was distributed to this workforce with the scope of discovering how their health and safety is being safeguarded and also to quantify the level of health and safety awareness of such employees. Finally this study will recommend a variety of control measures to make this workplace safer and in line with health and safety legislations.
