Hitting the bottle : women with an alcohol problem

Abstract

This study discusses the subject of women with alcohol problems and tries to see whether they receive support or help from their husbands/partners. The study includes a review of the literature dealing with the family problems they face and the stigmatisation they endure from society. The results and analyses of five women who are alcohol dependant are also presented. It was found that female alcoholics hardly ever receive full support from their husbands/partners and are also likely to be taking care of their children in spite of their problem. Most of the time, they also suffer social stigmatisation. Facilities, that accommodate the needs of women who seek treatment, are also mentioned.
