Abstract: The nature of work carried out in schools is by far of a lesser risk than work carried out in other industries. This does not imply that schools are a safe haven. In fact several injuries, mishaps and a fatality were recorded in the recent years. There is always the possibility of fire. Threats and physical abuse from students and parents on school staff nowadays is also becoming more common. Schools also tend to be crowded places where the spread of disease is not uncommon. There are different working roles in a school environment. These include academic duties, cleaning duties, clerical and administrative duties. This study shows that there is a wide discrepancy between the number of emergencies that are reported and those that are not. Unofficial data is available from teachers who where involved in an emergency in one way or another. Another important issue that emerges is that teachers do not seem yet aware of the importance of reporting the emergencies they where involved in. This study looks into the emergency preparedness plans available at present in four state secondary schools. It will show how not all schools are well prepared and equipped for emergencies. Data obtained also shows that the amount of emergency equipment in schools falls very short of the required standards stated by legislation.
