Abstract: | This is my general hypothesis of this exercise. However one of the readings which inspired me to start off with the above-mentioned framework was a statement by a female local councillor: - "Taking the decision to contest the election was not easy. When the Prime Minister asked me to contest the election for the local council, at first I saw the situation as impossible. However I later talked it over with my family and decided to take up the offer" - The Times Saturday 121 h October, 1996 One of the reasons as stated by the councillor herself for her reluctance was that the political scene was very male-dominated. Moreover in my sample study I found out that only one of the interviewees was a major, six were deputy majors and the rest out of the twenty-nine interviewees were councillors. In fact In the Maltese Islands there are two majors and only 18 deputy majors out of the 69 localities. |
