Abstract: The starting point of this research project was to investigate whether 'latchkey' youth problem was present in the sample chosen. To this effect this research project aimed also at proposing a youth centre on school premises after normal school time hours. A youth centre in the vicinity of home would be the start of the idea of having the school as a community centre. It would offer young people a safe place where an opportunity can be given for developing positive character traits and a sense of civic responsibility through informal education. This idea was presented to both youth and parents with the aim of finding out what is expected from such a venture and also what other ideas or suggestions they might have. Hundred questionnaires were carried out with youth from two different secondary schools. Interviews were also held with parents. Results in this sample showed that there seems to be no problem of 'latchkey' youth. The idea of a youth centre on school premises, in the vicinity of where one lives was accepted both by youth and parents. The findings allowed ample space for discussion and recommendations.
