Abstract: This project analyses the local government bonds and their appeal amongst the Maltese investors. Malta Government bonds have always been a favourite investment asset amongst the Maltese and this dissertation will bring to the fore the reasons for this. This project outlines the various facets that form part of the world of government bonds. The academic literature available is summarised into two main areas which tackle the bond characteristics and gives an overview of the Malta Government Bonds. The research approach which was adopted involved mainly primary research. Interviews with financial intermediaries and questionnaires to Maltese investors helped to bring to the fore the reasons why Maltese investors buy these types of assets and their attitude towards them. From this study, it has emerged that the main reasons why Maltese investors buy Malta Government bonds are mainly because they are liquid, low risk and because they give a fixed and periodical interest. On the other hand, the main risks which they associate with these types of assets are political risk and inflation risk. It also emerged that people prefer Malta government bonds over shares and funds, however they prefer corporate bonds and equally like fixed deposit bank accounts. This dissertation also explored the attitude of the Maltese versus the secondary market and it emerged that many Maltese investors are not passive ones but are active traders on the market. Finally, the study revealed that the majority of the participants who do not own MGS consider buying them in the future.
