Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the level of stress among health and safety teachers, personal strain, and the specific mechanisms they use to cope with stress. Self administered questionnaires were distributed to all Health and Safety teachers' across primary and secondary state schools in Malta and Gozo. The results showed that teachers' are experiencing moderate to high levels of work related stress. Signs of psychological distress, were demonstrated by moderate anxiety and low psychological well being, as well as decreased job satisfaction and maladaptive coping mechanisms such as aloofness and feelings of depression. Teachers reported that certain working conditions such as a heavy workload, greater responsibility, fewer resources, lack of administrative support, lack of job control and insecurity has created a negative atmosphere. The findings were discussed in reference to the current educational practice and recommendations for prevention of occupational stress and stress management were proposed.
