Abstract: This study explores and evaluates current procedures and policies in place vis-a-vis young people and the Juvenile Justice System in Malta from a broad angle. Local and foreign literature and legislation was reviewed in this regard, in addition discovering policies and trends in place in other EU countries. The aim was to highlight the quality of service that need to be administered to create a balance between the two facets of justice, that is, rehabilitation and reform. The importance of the implementation of a much-needed revamp in policy and procedure in addition to a well-focused prevention regime is indicated. The study utilises a qualitative research whereby the true-life experience of two youth affected by the system is critically reviewed. The opinion of eight professionals working in the field was sought to gather insight into the system from the stakeholder's perspective. The data analysis explores in brief the background of young offenders and why they may manifest antisocial behaviour. It was found that it is commonly known amongst the experts that a remedial/rehabilitative structure is inevitable and urgently needed for those individuals who skip the norms. The study concludes with possible recommendations for improvements in such a delicate social field. Recruiting the modem ethos of juvenile justice, whereby setting new pathways for a restorative justice system. Focusing mainly on rehabilitating and recuperating our disorientated young persons in the best possible manner in the context of contemporary society. Recommendations for further research are being made.
