Abstract: Electricity in Malta is generated by two Thermal Power Stations with the use of heavy fuel-oil. Optimum operating efficiency is obtained by injecting various chemicals substances. For a better burnout, some chemicals are added to fuel-oil while others, during water and steam production to counteract corrosion. Power plant operators monitor and operate chemical dosing pumps to ensure this efficiency. Unfortunately, the majority of these operators are unaware of the exposure risks these hazardous chemicals have in their respect. This study is intended to gauge the knowledge of these operators, about awareness in the safe use of chemical substances. Based on a quantitative and qualitative study on 152 exposed employees, one concludes that there is a lack of obligatory information. Preemployment training and on-going training is insufficient. There are no specific or consistent systems of work due to shift work. These employees need to be trained and educated about the chemical substances, this will help motivate them and improve operational efficiency.
