Abstract: | The study and research in this thesis is focused on a sample of Enemalta van drivers which in between drives approximately one hundred and forty vans, driven by an amount of drivers. Skilled workers and other people are assigned to drive these vans due to today's improvement in the corporation structure were it is bound to implement flexibility. Only people in possession of a clean driving license are authorised to drive these vehicles. One has to identify how they perceive health and safety issues on their hours of work. This study shows that there are no near misses reported, and some small accidents in relation to their job are not reported. Another important issue that emerged during research is that these van drivers do not seem yet aware of the importance of reporting slight practical incidents or else the system does not cater for such accidents. All this shows the need for the adoption of an effective accident and near misses report system which would help employers get a better picture of the health and safety situation in their job. This study also reveals that van drivers have a complex occupation, and the range of hazards to which these drivers are exposed is very wide. Hazards to which these van drivers are likely exposed are expressed in more detail in the course of this thesis. Hopefully, with the suggestion of this study one would lead of understanding and learn the preventive measures that implement to reduce accidents to these drivers on their working hours. Therefore, with this study also one would be in a position how to minimise traffic accidents that are rarely to occur on the Maltese roads by the means of recommendations for changes in the road infrastructure, and by the enforcement of these changes and adopted recommendations. |
