The University of Malta Library is dedicated to providing first-rate training for students, academics and administrative, technical and research staff on Library resources and services.

We offer a range of workshops which will help and guide you in your research endeavours. If the schedule is unavailable contact us and we'll organise an individual or group training session.

HyDi is your one stop search gateway to both print and online Library resources.

During HyDi workshops you will learn how to:

  • enter a keyword and search both print and online Library material at once
  • make easier searches, retrieving full-text articles and other material more quickly
  • refine by subject, resource types, collections etc.
  • sign in and request books on loan and renew books from the HyDi interface.

Duration: 1 hour

Audience: Undergraduates, postgraduates, academics and administrative, technical and research staff who would like to know more about accessing the Library’s online resources.

RefWorks is a Bibliographic Management Software (BMS) used to compile bibliographies.

During the RefWorks workshops you will learn how to:

  • use RefWorks – a Bibliographic Management Software
  • add references manually into your personal RefWorks account or direct export references from online sources such as Google Scholar and online databases that Library subscribes to
  • save references in different folders according to your assignments and research
  • create a bibliography in your preferred output style (APA, Harvard, MHRA, etc.) with the click of a button
  • use Write-n-Cite: an added tool which works simultaneously with your Word Processor and facilitates entry of in-text citations and footnotes in your assignment, dissertation, long essay, project or article.

Duration: 1 hour

Audience: Undergraduates, postgraduates, academics and administrative, technical and research staff who are carrying out research or writing papers and dissertations. 

The series consists of three workshops, each covering different aspects of information literacy.

Information Literacy: Introduction

During this workshop you will learn different information literacy skills that will aid you in doing research, such as building search queries, locating, selecting and evaluating information.

Information Literacy: Referencing and avoiding plagiarism
During this workshop you will learn what plagiarism is and how to summarise, paraphrase, and directly quote passages from the text in order to avoid it. This session does not cover RefWorks or Turnitin.

Information Literacy: Additional research tools
During this workshop you will get acquainted with multiple versatile tools that can be used in conjunction with the standard Library resources and databases to maximize the efficiency and scope of your research.

Easy and constant access to information is causing end-user overload and leading to difficulties in identifying, evaluating, selecting, locating and accessing relevant and reliable information sources that can address specific information needs. During these workshops you will learn about various aspects of information literacy that will aid you in doing research. This course will allow you to master essential tools for pursuing a university level course or doing research in general. 

Duration: 1 hour each

Audience: Anyone who would like to know more about information literacy and research skills.

Discover the Archives welcomes patrons to the rarely seen area of the Library and gives them an opportunity to discover for themselves some of the gems that form part of the Library's special collections.
During this session you will be shown a selection of material formerly belonging to notable writers such as Ruzar Briffa and Dun Karm, the beautiful botanical sketches drawn by the naturalist Guido Lanfranco, a selection of material from the UM archives dating back to 1800, rare books from the early days of printing and many other fascinating items. The procedure for consulting the material housed within the archives and the rules that need to be observed while visiting the section will also be explained.

Duration: 1 hour

Audience: Anyone who would like to know more about the Archives and special collections.

The Library tour conducted at the Main Library on Campus will cover general information about the Main Library, its departments and the services it offers, instructions on how to find, borrow and return books and introduction to the Library Online Catalogue.

The online session conducted online via Zoom will cover general information about the Main Library, its departments and the services it offers, instructions on how to find, borrow and return books, basic training on the Library Online Catalogue, and a brief introduction to online journals and databases.

Enhancing the visibility of your research output: a hands-on workshop on how to upload your research papers on the UM institutional repository - OAR@UM

OAR@UM is UM’s institutional repository that serves as a platform for authors and researchers wanting to upload their research output for open access. Open access enhances research dissemination and visibility and eventually augments the researcher's academic reputation and that of UM. 

The session will be divided in two parts:

  1. a concise overview of open access and the benefits of uploading research on OAR@UM.
  2. a hands-on session - Uploading research on OAR@UM.

During the session, participants will:

  • create a submitter account
  • request permission to upload their research in a particular community/collection
  • upload their research using the self-deposit method
  • complete the required description fields using appropriate metadata
  • learn about mediated deposit and consent forms.

Participants are to bring with them a PDF of their research publication so that it can be uploaded on OAR@UM during the hands-on session.
Duration: 1 hour

Audience: academic, administrative, technical and research staff carrying out research and project managers working on EU-funded projects.
