Visits to European or other universities

Students of the University of Malta have a number of opportunities to spend a period (usually 1 semester) studying in a university in another country. Information about such exchange programmes is available from the University International and EU Office.

While the Institute encourages students to undertake such visits, we also strongly recommend that students wishing to study abroad follow these guidelines:

  • Before making the decision to study abroad, consult with the Academic Coordinator of the Institute. This is necessary in order to ensure that your visit does not conflict with the requirements of your degree, as well as to ensure that such a visit will be of maximum benefit to you from an academic point of view.
  • If you have decided to spend a semester abroad, you should try as far as possible to determine in advance what courses you are taking. Most universities will have their course programmes published online. Make sure that you discuss these decisions with a member of IoL staff, in order to avoid potential problems, such as missing study units which are a compulsory part of your degree programme.
  • Typically, the best time for a visit to another university is the second semester of Year II, as this is the period where an extended stay overseas is least likely to conflict with your programme of studies locally.
