The linguistic structure of Maltese

The programme will be divided into three main strands, which will examine the following topics.

  1. The sound system of Maltese. This covers aspects of both the segmental and suprasegmental structure of Maltese, with an overview of the historical development of Maltese phonology.
  2. The Maltese lexicon, grammar and meaning. This covers various elements of the structure of Maltese, its morphology, inflection and compounding as well as derivation, in both the verbal and the nominal systems. Topics to be discussed include:
    • word order
    • topicalisation
    • verbless structures
    • tense and aspect
    • aspects of Maltese semantics, with particular reference to the semantics of possession
  3. Maltese in context. A miscellany of topics will be examined with the aim of demonstrating the linguistically rich context within which Maltese continues to thrive. The topics include:
    • the development of Maltese in relation to other languages together, with an overview of the linguistic situation in Malta
    • language planning
    • Maltese Sign Language
    • computer technologies and Maltese
    • Maltese literature and the contribution of literary output to the continuing development of the language
    • the effects on Maltese of its recently acquired status as an official language of the EU.
A number of seminars focussing on the above topics will also be organised, which participants are invited to attend.
