MASRI – Maltese Automatic Speech RecognItion


Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology


1. Applications are invited for part-time posts of Research Support Assistant/Officer I/II to work on MASRIMaltese Automatic Speech RecognItion. MASRI is a project supported by a University of Malta Research Grant. The project is hosted by the University of Malta’s Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology and the project co-ordinator is Dr Lonneke van der Plas. The main aim of this project is to gather and annotate a large amount of speech data to be used for developing an automatic speech recognition system for Maltese. Speech recognition systems take spoken data as input and produce a transcription of the spoken data automatically. These are used in voice-activated applications such as GPS navigators and several smart phone applications.


2. Applicants must have good knowledge of and proficiency in Maltese, including of the rules of Maltese orthography. They should also have participated in training offered through the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology on annotating and segmenting spoken data, and/or followed a number of (even if minimal) Year 1 study-units in Linguistics/Linguistics of a particular language. Applicants should be capable of demonstrating their ability to work as part of a team.


3. The post/s involve a maximum overall total of 55 hours each for a period 3 months and carries an hourly rate of €8 for undergraduate students, €10 for candidates with a first degree and €12 for candidates with a Masters degree.
