Dr. Peter Grech graduated as Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta in 1979 and after some time working  in private industry and in private legal practice he pursued a career at the Office of the Attorney General . He joined the Office of the Attorney General in 1983 and was appointed Assistant to the Attorney General in 1994, Deputy Attorney General in 2005 and received his appointment as Attorney General in September 2010.

He participated in the Council of  Europe’s Steering Committee on Mass Media between 1990 and 2004 and later in the Steering Committee on Media and New Communication Services. He also represented Malta in various Ministerial Conferences on Mass Media Policy between 1991 and 2002 and in high level meetings on human rights since 2010.

He has lectured media law and public law at the University of Malta since 1994.

In the course of his legal career he has pleaded on behalf of the Government of Malta  in many important court cases before Maltese and European courts and  has  participated in various law reform projects, Government commissions and international meetings. 

He is currently  Malta’s Government Agent before the European Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice and a member of the Council of Europe’s Steering Committee on Human Rights.
