Regional integration has become an integral element of global political, economic and social processes. To which degree the comparative study of regional integration will contribute to new insights into the evolution of world order in the 21st century, including patterns of relations in the Mediterranean, depends also on future developments around the world. This course assess the global proliferation of regional integration in its theoretical context and with strong emphasis on empirical evidence from regional experiences around the globe.

It is obvious that the trajectory of European integration cannot be copied in other regions. But it is also evident that the global interest in the path European integration has taken has steadily increased. Only politically-driven and law-based integration processes can be compared with the European experience. In its comparative study on the global evolution of region-building this course applies a historical and analytical perspective. Since region-building has become an integral part of the European Union's external policy, this course will also look at key parameters of EU governance and its evolution.
