On November 2nd 2016, H. E. Ms. Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for European Foreign and Security Policy delivered a keynote address at the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC), University of Malta, on the theme of 'The Mediterranean in the EU Global Strategy'. The event was opened by the Pro-Rector for Students & Staff Affairs Outreach Dr. Carmen Sammut. The Hon. Dr. George Vella, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta, delivered the Introductory Speech.

During the lecture H. E. Ms. Mogherini highlighted numerous security challenges in the Mediterranean that the EU is currently seeking to manage in a more effective manner including the issue of human trafficking, the instability in Libya, the conflict in Syria and ongoing diplomatic initiatives related to the situation in Cyprus and the Middle East. The lecture was followed by a Q&A session with the students of the University of Malta, moderated by Prof. Stephen Calleya, Director of MEDAC.
