German and French State Ministers for Europe discuss European integration with MEDAC students and staff

H.E. Harlem Désir, Minister of State for European Affairs at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development and H.E. Michael Roth, Minister of State for Europe at the German Federal Foreign Office visited MEDAC on 23 January 2017 and addressed MEDAC students and staff on the current state of European integration, contemporary challenges and the way forward. The guests were welcomed by the Chairman of the Academy, Dr. Joe Borg. The holder of the German Chair for Peace Studies and Conflict prevention at MEDAC, Dr. Monika Wohlfeld, moderated the event. Click here for the press release by the German Embassy in Malta.

Ministers Désir and Roth emphasized that while the German-French reconciliation cannot be seen as a blueprint for others, it does show that a history of conflict can be overcome. France and Germany are supporting reconciliation processes in numerous parts of the world. The two Ministers addressed a wide-ranging set of questions from MEDAC students and staff.

The 22 January is the Day of Franco-German Friendship which provides an opportunity to celebrate Franco-German friendship. This symbolic date was chosen in 2003 on the 40th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty – signed on 22 January 1963 and setting the seal on reconciliation between France and Germany.

The German Foreign Office is a stake-holder of the Academy and in 2009 established a German Chair for Peace Studies and Conflict Prevention at MEDAC.
