Dr Bridget Ellul

Qualification and Experience

Dr Bridget Ellul, MBChB, MRCPath, FRCPath, is the Head of the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. She is a full-time Senior Lecturer in Forensic Pathology and has chaired the Board of the Institute of Forensic Studies since 2001.
She graduated in medicine at the University of Glasgow, UK, in 1980 and specialized in histopathology and forensic medicine, obtaining the MRCPath in 1988 and the FRCPath, in 1997. In Scotland, UK, she worked as a Lecturer in Pathology at Aberdeen University, where she also was employed as a Crown Office forensic pathologist. From 1991 to 2000, she worked as a Consultant Histopathologist at St Luke’s Hospital, Malta, and had a part time post in Pathology and Forensic Medicine at the University. In 2000, she moved to a full time post in Forensic Pathology, becoming Head of the Department in 2005. Her current lecturing commitments are in Pathology, to medical, dental and paramedical students, and in Forensic Medicine, to medical, dental, law, police and criminology students. She has been a member of the Faculty Board of Medicine & Surgery since 1993 and has served on the Curriculum Committee since 1996. She is on the Admissions Committee for the Faculty of Dental Surgery and the Institute of Forensic Studies.
She has provided forensic pathology services as a medical court expert in Malta since 1992. She has an interest in road traffic accidents and deaths by drowning. She is also heavily involved in medical ethics and is currently a member of the national Bioethics Consultative Committee, the national Health Ethics Committee, responsible for assessing Clinical Trials, and the Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty. She has served on the Medical Council and is the current President of the Malta College of Pathologists.

Research Capacity

She has an interest in forensic pathology, with research on road traffic accidents and deaths by drowning and is currently working on:
1. Analysis of Fatal Road Traffic Accidents in Malta over a ten year period (1995-2004), with Dr. K. England and Dr. M. Sammut
2. EU publication on Forensic Medicine in the European States, ed. Prof. B. Madea, Germany, in collaboration with Prof. A. Busuttil
Her other expertise is in the ethical field, preparing ethical opinions and recommendations for the Bioethics Consultative Committee (BCC).
