DESCRIPTION - Consumption of medicines and non-medicines, the impact of socio-economic factors and pharmaceutical industry actions on prescribing and consumption;
- Measuring the costs and outcomes of medicines/non-medicines use;
- Cost-benefit, cost-minimisation, cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analysis, evidence-based technologies and pharmacoeconomic analysis, using pharmacoeconomic analyses to make formulary decisions and set prices; and
- Reference pricing, evidence-based procurement techniques.

Study-unit Aims:

To provide students with an understanding of methods used to measure consumption, beneficial and adverse effects, and cost-effectiveness of health technologies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Understand the techniques used to measure medicinal and non-medicinals consumption;
2. Understand factors that influence prescribing and consumption;
3. Understand methods used to measure beneficial and adverse effects.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Be able to correctly interpret data on consumption and effects;
2. Understand techniques used in measuring cost-effectiveness and cost-benefits; and
3. Be able to correctly interpret pharmacoeconomic data and understand how data can be used to set prices and control health-systems budgets.
