DESCRIPTION The unit presents an overview of approaches to the organization, financing and delivery of health services in different countries in Europe and in the USA.

-Healthcare systems and regulations;
-International Government regulation of healthcare;
-Healthcare delivery systems: hospitals, ambulatory care, long-term care, home care, mental health services, public health;
-Health financing models in different countries.

Each student will identify a healthcare system in a specific country and setting and undertake an appraisal of the system identifying strengths and weaknesses. This exercise will be undertaken within the fieldwork activities. During the seminars, the students will individually present this analysis.

Study-unit Aims:

- To present health systems in Europe and USA;
- To appraise health system models;
- To propose models for developing health systems to maintain rational and safe healthcare delivery.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Present approaches to the organisation, financing and delivery of health service;
- Analyse historical, cultural, economical and political aspects of health care systems in European countries and the US.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Appraise examples of health systems;
- Assess strengths and weaknesses of different health systems;
- Present challenges and priorities with respect to service provision, workforce, technologies, financing, policy, leadership, advocacy and governance.
