Guidelines to compiling the surgery undergraduate logbook

Submission of the logbook, prior to M.D. 5th Year Clinical examinations, is compulsory and must contain:
• 11 cases covered in 3rd year (one of which must be an in-depth study including research)
• 11 cases covered in 4th year (one of which must be an in-depth study including research)
• 11 cases covered in 5th year (one of which must be an in-depth study including research)
The in-depth studies must include references/bibliography.

The cases logbook should be produced on a word processor and neatly presented in a folder or file.  It must include the year, student name and ID number on the cover page.  M.D. 5th Year students are to submit the completed logbook by the last Friday in March.

Cases (General Surgery Wards admissions ONLY) should be varied and follow the prescribed format, namely:
• location (ward)
• demographic data of patient (name – initials only; gender, age, status, occupation)
• presenting complaint
• history of presenting complaint
• past medical and surgical history
• drug history
• family history
• social history
• systemic enquiry
• physical examination
• pre-operative/diagnostic Investigations
• management (should case not require operation)
• pre-operative period
• surgical Procedure
• post-operative period

The completed night shifts, tutorials and clinical skills forms booklet (which must all be undertaken locally) should be handed in separately and not form part of the binding of the above cases. The booklet, which will be kept as a permanent record in your University of Malta student file, should contain:

• night shift duties forms for 3rd, 4th and 5th year
• surgical core topics tutorials forms for 3rd, 4th and 5th year
• surgical other topics tutorials forms for 3rd, 4th and 5th year
• surgery clinical skills forms for 3rd, 4th and 5th year.
